Hamburger instead of Falafel
Challenging the traditional Israeli ‘street food’ of falafel and shawarma were two South African who introduced the first Israeli hamburgers. In 1982, Ron Lapid and Barry Scop established Burger Ranch that became one of Israel’s leading consumer chains Burger Ranch broke through the tradition of the traditional Oriental food, by supplying first class meat imported from South Africa.

Sweet Tooth
Known in the Bible as the “land of milk and honey”, one South African, Lenny Sackstein took this to a new level when he established ‘taste of Israel”, emerging as one of the top candy firms in Israel, and was known internationally as “The Firm”.
Today, this same confectionary manufacturer is known as Carmit Candy, with Sackstein still chairman.

The Meating Place
In Ra’anana, where after Jerusalem, the greater number of South Africans reside, is Meatland, that provides the local South African community with its all-time favourites such as: biltong, droëwors , marmite, curries and chutneys.
As its founder, Maish Isaacson, originally from Pretoria, says, “I want South Africans to feel at home – at least in their stomach.”
